Temporary housing

The municipality will help you find a temporary place to live if you have nowhere to sleep or stay in the next 24 hours.

Description

If you need emergency housing and cannot get a place on your own, the municipality is obligated to find temporary shelter for you. Families with children, children and youth will be offered suitable accommodation. This means, for example, that the offer is not generally extended to substance abusers (see the link to municipal housing below).

Criteria/conditions

You need housing in an emergency situation.

Charges/Cost of the service

The service is free, but if you can afford it, you will be expected to pay part of the rent yourself.

Acts

This is a statutory service. See Section 27 Temporary shelter of the Act relating to social services through NAV.

Forvaltningsloven
Sosialtjenesteloven

Time taken to consider the application

NAV will process the case as soon as possible. In cases of emergency temporary housing, it will often be necessary to process the case on the same day.

Possibilities to appeal; procedure

If NAV denies your request, you can submit an appeal within three weeks from the date on which you received the decision. Explain what you are dissatisfied with and why you believe the decision should be changed. If you need assistance, you can enquire with NAV. If NAV upholds its decision, the case will be passed on to the county governor, who will determine whether the appeal should be sustained.
